Davyd Davison asked Lev Grossman:

First, I wanted to thank you—your books meant a lot to my mom and have meant a ton to me. Perhaps un peu philosophically: How much agency did you feel over the story arc of The Magicians novels? I’m not talking about plot here. Because even as I loathsomely raged at the particular twists and turns of sorrow your books caused me, I never doubted they were the natural, even necessary, course for the story to take.

Lev Grossman Not much agency. I didn't plan the trilogy out from the beginning; I didn't even plan the next book while I was working on the one before it. But when it came time to write each book, I knew what it was going to be about. But I don't know how I knew.
