I don’t know for sure but here are two possibilities: 1) it could be a demonstration of what makes the androids different to some humans: intellectual curiosity without emphatic restraint. 2) it could also be a representation of humankind and the pursuit of knowledge at any cost or for knowledge’s own sake. Are all questions worth pursuing? Should ethics be a consideration? Is the suffering of other beings justified if humankind can gain and benefit from it?

I saw the spiders "extra" legs as a metaphor for humans having "extra" over androids, the androids rip them off to see what difference it makes, as a way of understanding how their lack of empathy makes them less than human, when they function just as well without it.
