Mira asked Lev Grossman:

Did writing the Magicians have a dulling effect on your mood? Or did it feel good to let loose all the emotions?

Lev Grossman The second one. In a way writing the books was a way for me to feel emotions that I was otherwise having trouble accessing, if that means anything. Like when I was writing The Magician's Land, my father was very ill, and I knew he was going to die. And you can see his death echoing through the book, refracted in different ways in different situations ... I had a complicated relationship with him, and I think I was trying to figure out how to feel about his death.
