The characters are set up in the beginning to be aspects of …moreNO, this book "messes" with you by not being logical. That is not psychological suspense. The characters are set up in the beginning to be aspects of fully drawn out people but aren't. The reader is drawn in by being in an usual setting and a different time but otherwise if this was present day, the effect wouldn't be the same. Its a manipulative novel but in no way on the level of other well known books of that genre. The Talented Mr Ripley was a fascinating well drawn character while Lucy seems to be the equivalent of those characters who take over the richer/cuter/ more naïve roommate vis a vis SWF and so many like that.(less)
