The characters are set up in the beginning to be aspects of fully drawn out people but aren't. The reader is drawn in by being in an usual setting and a different time but otherwise if this was present day, the effect wouldn't be the same. Its a manipulative novel but in no way on the level of other well known books of that genre. The Talented Mr Ripley was a fascinating well drawn character while Lucy seems to be the equivalent of those characters who take over the richer/cuter/ more naïve roommate vis a vis SWF and so many like that.(less)
