Shawn asked J.L. Langland:

Just finished rereading the series and I'm wondering why why there only one control key for doom and tartours yet o wardens and when there going to fix that weakness, and if you thought about adding a sleep/stasis room for the guards so they won't get mental issues or need to reset, and a rotation where 3 wardens are woke while the rest sleep and having it so it takes two keys to do anything major?

J.L. Langland Great question(s)!

1) Control Key: Doom and Tartarus are completely separate "keys"
1a) The Wand of Orcus is the "key" for controlling Doom. It takes a lot of personal mana to wield it properly, however, presumably someone else e.g. Volund, Phaestus or someone senior D'Orcs could have been rekeyed to it, particularly with Phaestus and Volund around. However, it was "missing" Now technically it was within Doom all along, but it was heavily shielded and concealed by magic by Lilith, Sentir Fallon, Aodh (and others) so they did not know it was there.
Could they have crafted another and relit Doom? Possibly, we will have discussions of this, but I suspect that given their weekend state (missing 20K+ D'Orcs), it was best to lay low/play dead. Remember Tizzy was promising that Orcus would return...anyway...there will be discussion of this, particularly as we explore the aftermath of the battle that killed Orcus. Lots of new information becomes available at the begining of Book 4.
1b) Tartarus, main control of Tartarus is the Control Room, and with a trained staff, that is really the main way of controlling it. That is what they used for intake/etc. Even when Orcus was there. The Wand linked to Tartarus (was keyed--so yes it was technically a key) but he mainly used it for monitoring and was moving to more control via the AI, but that was still pretty new (only a few thousand years of testing). So since the wand was missing, I am guessing they said "why got to all that work, we can use the Control Room if needed"

2) The "bigger" weakness that they need to rethink (again) was the centralization of the control of all the Doomalogues, such that when the main Doom went Down, the little ones did too. Originally, the Doomalogues were capable of independent operation and did not need Mount Doom in the Abyss. However, after the Necromancer "incident" they centralized control of all the Doomalogues in Mount Doom. They didn't want to have to deal with any more floating eyeballs tormenting people with big hairy feet.

The rotation thing is a big problem, in fact, that was the whole big issue with the dispirited D'Orcs, they had basically gotten despondent and "checked out"

As for the wardens sleeping, well most of them have other interests to attend to (e.g. Phaestus is a god in multiple pantheons with lots of worshippers. Volund was running around on Earth making swords for a while after Orcus died (recall he made Caliban/Excalibur and several others.

With Tartarus to do things safely, the rule books say to use an entire trained team, after all it's no small thing to imprison a god.
