After reading The Giver, I also read Gathering Blue and Messenger. I saw them as completely independent stories even though I had purchased them as a trilogy. How would you describe the connection between the three stories?

Lois Lowry Jonas is mentioned (a blue-eyed boy described by Matt) at the end of GATHERING BLUE. Then he appears as an adult character in MESSENGER, and Gabe is mentioned as an 8-year-old. In the fourth book, SON, they all appear. That book takes them to fourteen years later. Jonas is married, with children, and Gabriel is a teenager.
