Is there a book or online resource you recommend on the Russian fairytales that inspired your Winternight books?

Katherine Arden That depends. Do you want to read the actual fairy tales or read scholarly books ABOUT fairytales? Because for the former, I would try the collected folktales of Aleksandr Afanasyev, or the fairytales of Pushkin (although Pushkin more than any writer I've come across really loses a lot in translation) For the latter, I would go for Russian Folk Belief, by Linda Ivanits or The Bathhouse at Midnight by w.f Ryan.

I was wondering how you go about creating and developing your characters, without being blunt or overly descriptive? I noticed in your novel that Vasya and even all the minor characters were fleshed out and felt authentic. This is something I struggle with a lot in my own writing so I'd love some tips!
