Are the fires affecting you? I recall one story you wrote about a disaster on the coast road, a mudslide, I think...But this is reality; I hope you and your family (as well as everyone out there) are OK.

T. Coraghessan Boyle Thanks, Will. We were evacuated for ten days, but due to the efforts of the 8,500 firefighters, our little burg was spared with the loss of but ten houses (and my heart goes out to those whose homes were destroyed here and elsewhere). It was mighty terrifying.

Hi! The first book of yours I read was Drop City, which I found in a sale bin in NYC. Serendipity. Since then I've read pretty much all your other works. I'm an anthropologist and I love your ability to show me something truly human in all you write. My question is, how do you balance cynicism with hope when you write and think of characters? Or do you think those are even opposing categories? Thank you!
