Jalal asked:

I am beginner, which book do you recommend to read first? - The Story of Philosophy (will durant) - A History of Western Philosophy (Bertrand Russell) - Sophie's World ( Jostein Gaarder) - The Dream of Enlightenment: The Rise of Modern Philosophy (Gottlieb) Thanks

Billy Sheppard That is a great list. You should allow yourself to begin wherever you find the first book. Do start the Gottlieb with "Dream of Reason" before "Dream of Enlightenment." I am re-reading those volumes.

I think the best may be the Bertrand Russell. It was a minor miracle when it first was published, and remains a touchstone. The Will Durant is terrific, but you may as well begin with Durant's fine work on ancient Greece and plow through the centuries as far as he got. All of these books are available for listening as brilliant audiobooks through various services including Hoopla.

Best of luck!
