Wendy Schapiro
Wendy Schapiro asked Lois Lowry:

Hi Lois! We read The Giver with our 6th grade students towards the end of the school year. We've always left the ending of the book open to their interpretation, because you used to approach it in the same fashion. Now that you've come out and said how you intended it to be interpreted, do you think we should still go with an open ending?

Lois Lowry I think you might allow your students to debate and discuss the possibilities..and then let them know there are further books, that the author has selected one possibility.
