I considered a lot of different branching paths. I always knew that the middle chapter would be the really dark, Titus Andronicus part of the trilogy, which showed the true awful cruelty of the world. But I also wanted to make the case that has terrible as the world is, it's possible to make one's peace with it. And I worried about seeming kind of Pollyanna-ish, but I had to be honest. It's true to my experience of the world.

Your Magician series has obviously been inspired by and is a tribute to many famous fantasy series such as Harry Potter and Narnia. The protagonist, Quentin, strongly reminds me of the anti-hero of another well-known series, Thomas Covenant. Were you inspired by Donaldson's Chronicles in any way when writing your novels, and if so, how?

I feel a bit guilty asking such a shallow question after seeing the thoughtful type of questions others were asking. But if you were suddenly put under a supernatural "curse" which would you choose? In other words: Vampire, werewolf, mummy, or something less "mainstream."
