(view spoiler)[I started your books around two months ago and finished them a few weeks later. Then read them again. And again. I keep realizing things about the book that slipped me by the first time (identities, events, etc). But down to the question itself. Was this intentional, to try to surprise the reader on their second time through? (hide spoiler)]
Brent Weeks
Yes. I wrote these books with layers of surprises and added meaning. Dante said he wrote at 4 levels at all times. I do less than that, mostly. ;) I wrote so that anyone (I thought) could understand the plot, even if they were reading really fast, but I wanted to reward careful readers and re-readers.
It's a bit scary to spend a lot of time adding extra layers that you realize most readers and critics will never even see, but that's just the way I write. I enjoy adding that. I gain so much pleasure when readers make obscure connections that I don't mind if some blogger misses it.

Hi Brent, I just discovered the Night Angel series a month ago, let's just say I'm now a devout insta-fan of yours. I'm curious, why doesn't the black ka'kari communicate more frequently with Kylar and vice-versa? It would seem the the knowledge and experience the ka'kari possessed would be just as valuable as the powers it imbues into Kylar/Durzo. I'm looking forward to starting the Lightbringer Series!

In your writing, you haven't shied away from LGBT characters, often making them strong and sympathetic characters, which I greatly appreciate. And I think my boyfriend would greatly enjoy reading your work... so what would you recommend to get him to reading: have the Night Angel torture and judge him, have Andross Guile blackmail and extort him into reading, or something else?
