A.R. Curry asked Lois Lowry:

When The Giver was written, I'm sure people weren't as sensitive about all the innocent touching that goes on in the book. But nowadays, scenes like the bath scene or the giver putting his hands on the receiver's bare skin unfortunately stands out as uncomfortably sexual. Do you find yourself shying away from these situations now, or do you still see the innocent beauty in it and write hoping that others will as well?

Lois Lowry I love the bath scene..it seems very innocent and tender. But it is not in the movie. And the Giver and the boy, in the movie, clasp hands. So things have changed as, sadly, times have changed.
