Lois Lowry:
When The Giver was written, I'm sure people weren't as sensitive about all the innocent touching that goes on in the book. But nowadays, scenes like the bath scene or the giver putting his hands on the receiver's bare skin unfortunately stands out as uncomfortably sexual. Do you find yourself shying away from these situations now, or do you still see the innocent beauty in it and write hoping that others will as well?

I love the bath scene..it seems very innocent and tender. But it is not in the movie. And the Giver and the boy, in the movie, clasp hands. So things have changed as, sadly, times have changed.

What do you think about the recent dystopians swimming around in the YA market? Is it neat to see the influx of works with the same genre as some of yours? What does a colorless world symbolizes in contrast to one full of colors and experiences? I have always thought this was to reduce, or exterminate, the controversies and the rebels. But what I mean is, how did you get the idea and what does it mean to YOU? Am I right about what it symbolizes? I'd love to hear your perspective because the idea is uncommon and fascinating.
