Number the Stars has been my favorite book for the past 25 years. Six months ago I stumbled across The Giver and it became an instant favorite as well. These books are so far apart in likeness that I must ask: is there anything you can't do??? I believe both these books will outlive you by centuries and yet always be relevant. Thank you!

I absolutely LOVE The Giver Quartet. My book club (made up of teachers) read the entire series this summer. The Giver is required reading for our 8th graders - but Messenger and Son moved me beyond belief. My friend and I wondered if Messenger has a connection to Christianity? We felt the character "Matty" might be loosely based on the life of Jesus. Any truth to that?

You published The Giver in the 1993, but Son wasn't published until 2012. Did you always have an idea of where you were going with the story, or did it begin to take shape as you wrote? I am a middle school teacher, and we will be studying The Giver this fall. We will also be talking a lot about the writing process. I would love to share with my students the process that unfolded over two decades.
