What inspired the idea for the idea actual place Caraval?

Stephanie Garber When I was writing Caraval I didn't intentionally base it on anywhere real, but once I finished and looked at the world I created I realized that pieces of it resembled to Bruges and Amsterdam. Both cities are beautiful and magical--full of canals and buildings that look as if they've been stolen from storybooks. Bruges also has delicious waffles for sale on the street--like the one Aiko eats in the book. :)
