Tina Mrs. Holt told Elsie that when Mr. Bainbridge (Rupert's father) sent her to live at The Bridge he said that house needed someone good and kind and who would never hold a grudge against anyone, or something like that. And, Sarah is the only character who fit that description, she was the one the house needed, supposing that what Mr. Bainbridge said was accurate.

PrettyFlamingo My take on this book was that Sarah was setting it all up all along having got the ideas from the journals. I hadn't thought of the explanation that the rest of you have come up with, about Hetta inveigling her way into Sarah. Maybe Laura can confirm!
