A Goodreads user asked Lois Lowry:

Dystopian fiction can be considered a very adult topic in writing, and extreamly dark. How do you find the balance when writing dystopian fiction to a young adult audience? Not just for The Giver but for the rest of the series? In each novel you touch an aspect of mankind's flaws and fears and translate it well to a young audience. How do you know when someting is "too dark" for a young adult novel?

Lois Lowry The only thing I find too dark for any audience, young or old, is mindless violence.

The thing I always try to focus on, in my books, is the possiblity for young people of courage and ideals to change the world.
