There was a lack of dialogue in the beginning of the book, was that intentional or just how things played out?

No, it really wasn't intentional. Sometimes my stories start with more internal monologue, and especially with Eva, who is a fairly isolated character, that felt appropriate. But I didn't really do it intentionally. :-)
