K.W. Colyard asked Lois Lowry:

I read the Anastasia Krupnik series in grade school. As I recall, the books were not what one expected from juvenile or YA literature at the time. They bore some coarse language, dealt with puberty and sex, and featured a fairly liberal family, but none of these things defined the books. I was wondering: did you ever receive any criticism for including such "mature" things so casually in children's books?

Lois Lowry Now and then someone would object. But for the most part the books were well regarded. They are being republished this fall, though, with some changes... Anastasia can no longer sip her father's beer foam. boo hoo!
