The idea of "Quest Chasers - The Deadly Cavern" came from a nightmare I had when I was 12. Many nightmares I have are vivid and horrifying, to the point that I wake up sweating and become paralyzed.
Thomas and I were going to make Quest Chasers a workbook filled with math problems and puzzles to help children learn but also have fun with the story. However, after outlining the workbook, Thomas said the story to move through the puzzles was too complicated for a workbook, that we should work on making it a story instead. This is the reason why there are puzzles in the book. Many of them were removed to help the book flow.
The nightmare I had was much more gruesome than what is written in the book. But to let younger readers have a chance to read it, we had to write it in a way that children would be able to handle it.
