While reading Son, my class and I had many questions about the settings in the book. There was such a contrast in each of the communities. We were wondering how one community could be progressive, like jet planes and then the other be so primitive, - no schools or doctors. How could these communities be so different from each other? Were they in the same dimension?

Lois Lowry PIcture a mountain village in rural Afghanistan: no electricity, no plumbing, lack of literacy, low life expectancy. Picture the city of Islamabad: computers, planes, hospitals, colleges. Not so very far apart! In the same dimension.

Hi Ms. Lowry, I am an educator in Japan at a high school and college. You have mentioned how Shibuya is like "Elsewhere" beyond the community of the Giver. When you wrote about the conformist society of The Giver (everyone dressed the same, etc.), did you have Japan in mind? Who then, are the Elders? The LDP?
