The initial inspiration for this book came from Walter Mitty. Have you seen that movie? It's about a guy who has a sort of 'awakening' and rediscovers life. So my first thought was to write a novel about a dying woman who finds her thirst for life. Then that idea sort of evolved (and took a far darker turn) into The Ghostwriter.
