I think it's OK for YA readers. I was reading advanced stuff at a young age. The "adult" content was a mystery, that's about it. Not scarring. In fact, I'd prefer this to the "and they all lived happily ever after" carp of fairy tales. Talk about setting yourself up for disappointment.

I would not recommend this book for children or young adults. Adult themes and esoteric content could spoil the story of the Nutcracker as they know it.
