Your question does not offer a dichotomy; I'd say that the series could be correctly described by either half.
I'll further say that these are not classical "fair play" mysteries, where you're expected to stop, say, 3 chapters from the end and figure out whodunnit based on the clues provided before the investigator explains in excruciating detail why you're right or wrong. Like many novels marketed as mysteries these days, these are primarily adventures with mystery and romance components.
