Mary Dalton
Mary Dalton asked Jane Davis:

I discovered your books in a very roundabout way and really loved "I Stopped Time." Indie authors and literary fiction seem to be something of an oxymoron in the U.S., and I would really love to discover more authors, especially those who work with historical fiction and more unusual forms, such as novellas. Any suggestions? Many thanks for any help you can give!

Jane Davis I am so sorry, Mary, I have only just discovered your question among general discussion points from Goodreads! I think it's true that the home for literary fiction is with the small independent presses these days. In the UK we have Bluemoose Books http://bluemoosebooks.com/who do a sterling job of supporting new talent. I have recently teamed up with nine other indie authors to produce two boxed sets with five novels in each. I have included the link so that you can take a look. Clare Flynn whose novel The Chalky Sea is included on boxed set one is an author of historical fiction. She won The Selfies Award in its second year. Shortlists of awards aimed at indie authors are another great way to track down some of the best. The US has its own Selfies Award http://selfiesbookawards.com/ which has a far higher profile than our UK version. I think the difficulty is not a lack of self-published books, but the fact that because so many indie authors set up publishing imprints, it is becoming more difficult to identify whether of not a book is self-published. https://www.vineleavespress.com/pando...
