As a school librarian, I have found that School Library Journal is generally on spot with age/grade recommendations. It recommends this book for grades 9 and up. I would recommend to grades 8 and up due to mature language, and topics. Characters are high school seniors and I generally keep the the character age close to age of reader. Excellent book.

I'd say 12+ depending on the 12 year old in question. The topics are serious, but a mature 12 year old may have need for that, and some 12 year olds have experienced the same issues as the main character, Justyce.

Me personally I think it's appropriate for 13+ because the readers are more mature in their sense of understanding of certain topics such as police corruption, gang -related actions, racism, etc. Plus, they also curse in the book.

Whatever age you are ready for your child to hear high-school aged women called skank, ho, and described with vulgar language as objects for sex ("tap that cherry," "fattest a** I have ever seen...good chance of gettin' her upstairs", that girl "is going to have my babies one day") by their peers in the book. There are also repeated uses of variations of F**, MF, and N** throughout the book.
