A Goodreads user asked Ed Ireland:

When working on a story, what helps you stay in the creative zone?

Ed Ireland I write in spurts. Once a direction takes root, I'll just allow it to run on its own until it finishes. My stories tell themselves for the most part. Once the section is finished, I might spend an hour or a few days looking for where it went before I can continue following it.
I tried to lay out a book once and it laughed at me. Then it ran off in its own direction and there I was, chasing after it again.
