It's not a "hard" read exactly, and Wuthering Heights had way more vocabulary than this, BUT this isn't an "easy" read, that said. If a 12 year old is at a higher reading level, and has a good grasp of vocabulary, then yes they could read it. I'd rate this as college level, because a lot of people I knew in high school could NEVER have read this (I'm 32 years old). In my mid-20s I did an honors English degree, and studied this in my 4th year, and you really need to be a more advanced reader to truly appreciate it and grasp its intricacies, its depths. I didn't really start reading for my own pleasure till grade 7 or 8, and at that time, this would have been too much for me. I didn't have a great grasp on vocabulary back then. I didn't grow up reading. I wasn't really pushed to learn a lot of new words as I grew up and into my teens. For the reader who started young, this is manageable. Long answer, sorry.(less)
