Asking if there is child abuse in this book is like asking if there is a whale in Moby Dick. It is the number one overriding theme of the novel.

Here in Maine we see, given the small, rural, population far too much family violence, which makes all too clear the sometimes inability for victims to see a way out until it is too late, or until the cost of escape is too high. He gets this spot on.

I can't agree that there was no insight to their relationship, it was Crystal clear. They show you who they were every interaction, she opened her mind and let's us in to see and feel what she was thinking every step. Her loathing, her love, her lust, her repulsion was not hidden. This book had you reading what it really was and not some fluffy psych babble explanation.

There was horrifying child abuse, and if you don't like reading about abuse, you should consider not reading this. While the author clearly showed his compassion for the girl, he really didn't provide much insight into her, or her father, or their relationship. That's what would have made it worth it to me.

Intensely, yes! Did you ever end up reading the book?!
Lisa A.
Oh yes. It's not an easy read, but it's worth it.
