This is not advice that will help people get published, but I think it's good advice for people who want to write good stuff: do things. Go climb a mountain or learn to scuba dive or learn Photoshop or whatever you're interested in. More often than not, it's the flourishes and ideas that passions other than writing bring to people's work that gives them dimension and makes them unique.
