Goodreads asked R.L. Nolen:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

R.L. Nolen Learn the craft first. Write and write and write and then rewrite it half a dozen times whilst attending a good critique group. A GOOD critique group will set you in your place and tell you exactly what they think and exactly what you NEED to change. Because every writer LOVES their own words. But a good critique group will tell you how awful your words are to the "virgin ear" (an editor) and this good critique group will tell you how to get better. This is what every writer needs. Amen. (sorry for all caps but there is no html option here for underlining.)
