How do you plan and write good books?

Dr. Block Honestly, the vast majority of my books just start with a beginning and an idea for the end. Then, I just write. I'm what they call "a discovery writer," meaning I write and discover the plot. Sometimes this can require a lot of rewriting; other times, it comes out almost perfect.
