Do you need to read earlier books with Smiley to follow this one, or can they be read out of order?

Then "The Spy Who Came In From…moreThe "Mundt Trilogy" really starts with "Call for the Dead," which introduces Smiley and his relation to Mendel and Ann. Then "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" is more or less required for "Legacy..." (My opinion: don't watch the Richard Burton movie.) Reference is made to events in "Tinker, Tailor,..." and "Smiley's People," which serve as spoilers if you want to read those. On the other hand, Le Carre almost always make one feel as though some back story is missing.(less)
