Do you need to read earlier books with Smiley to follow this one, or can they be read out of order?

Tim Some of the Circus characters including Smiley were first introduced in Le Carre's early novel "Call for the Dead". It might spoil your enjoyment of "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" if you read that first. I would suggest first read "Cold", then go back to "Call for the Dead" and "Looking Glass War". Then read "Tinker Tailor" which is the best of the lot, and move on chronologically from there.(less)
