A Goodreads user asked Melanie Dickerson:

can you read your books out of order? I accidentally bought the 6th book but really want to read it. Do i have to buy the first one or can i read this then the first five?

Melanie Dickerson Hi, Clare! Normally I would say it's not that big a deal if you read them out of order, but the 6th book is The Golden Braid, and there is a big plot twist/surprise in that book that won't be quite as exciting unless you've read the previous books. But they are all standalone, meaning you won't have any problem understanding what's going on, and the ending for each book is satisfying, with plenty of closure for the characters.
So, that said, if you don't want to buy all of them, you should probably at least read The Fairest Beauty before you read The Golden Braid.
Thanks for your question!
