Hyperion is very good--one of my favorite SF novels of all time. Colonel Fedmahn Kassad is one of my favorite SF soldier-badasses, and the historical battle sims were pure genius.
The last book that blew my mind like that was BLINDSIGHT by Peter Watts. It's a first contact hard SF novel, and Watts' aliens are TRULY alien, not just humans with forehead ridges.

Jan. 2019: I doubt you will ever see this message, but it needs to be said. hank you for the exquisite series that is Frontlines. My husband and I have been sharing the adventure during our two 30-45-min commutes since #1. There are two things we love about these stories... both the setting & military tech (hubs is retired USAF) and the well drawn, fabulous people. Will #7 be the last installment?
