I have the same question. Search by himself or with experienced accomplices. Making it part of the tour made no sense, except otherwise there would be no book.

SPOILER: This question niggled at me the whole time! Access to the park is restricted, so we know why Bodean called Jed to go in & get the money off the plane. But Jed's license allowed him in remote areas of the park & he could have searched alone any time without arousing suspicion...so why complicate it with clients on a pack-trip? Finding it on his own would have saved a lot of bloodshed.
