I was wondering the same thing; I guess since I'm listening to the book (while working) as opposed to reading it, my mind didn't retain the part that explained this.

May be this is how Sam pronounced "Mamma" when she was a small child. I doubt this with her physics intelligence, they could have started calling her "Gamma" before they knew what intelligence was.
