Goodreads asked David McElroy:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

David McElroy At an elementary school book fair, I picked up Bruce Coville’s "Goblins in the Castle", which changed my life, though I didn’t really know it then.  My ten-year-old mind was equally enraptured and terrified of the book, and the end result was a lifetime fascination with goblins.

Fast forward to about five years ago, when I first began reading R.A. Salvatore’s Drizzt Do’Urden stories. One of his short stories, "Dark Mirror", concerns a goblin who is different from his peers. This goblin has a much darker outlook on life than my Ben does and his story definitely does not end happy, but I loved the idea of portraying goblins as something more than mindless bottom dweller villains and I wanted to see the idea expanded upon.  So, I decided to write it myself.
