(view spoiler)[I just finished Sufficiently Advanced Magic and enjoyed it tremendously! Two questions about human development in Corin's world. First, does technology in the spires mirror the outside world, or does technology in the outside world come from the spires? Second, were the big 4 nations able to conquer the spires because they were most powerful, or did they become most powerful because of their access to the spires? (hide spoiler)]

Both good questions.
1. Some of the technology outside the spires was developed from studying what is inside, but some of it (mostly non-magical technology, like firearms) was developed completely separately. The spires have very advanced magical technology, but not a lot of mundane technology.
2. It's sort of both. Having access to a spire naturally gives a nation an advantage, because they can develop more attuned. Early on in the continent's history, there was a lot of competition for them, and naturally some of the most powerful nations ended up taking over the territory around each of the spires. There are cases where nations have gotten stronger by getting access to more spires, though - Edria would be the most recent case. They already had one spire, and they're much more powerful now that they've conquered Kelridge and gotten access to a second spire.

Hello. I love AA, WOBM, and W&W, and even though there are a lot of bigger mysteries and important questions I'm looking forward to in the future I've had this weird nagging question in my head since reading AA3. I know the answer is probably that I just need to wait until AA4 but figured it couldn't hurt to ask. How often have students in Lorian Heights had a crystal mark if ever?

Hi Andrew in my previous question you said the power of a spell wasn’t based on the power of the contracted beast. If so what is the point of having a contract with Seiryu or say an Ice Slime? Thank you and have a nice day Ps: I finished reading AA4 they day it came out and I loved it.. what you did to the characters was a bit harsh and what happened to Mara made me heartbroken :(
