I seriously loved White Oleander the novel. I was somewhat disappointed with White Oleander the movie. What are your feelings toward the film inspired by your work?

A movie can never be a book, can never replicate the experience. It can only be inspired by a book, and hopefully be a worthwhile piece of art in itself. It is very flattering when one artist wants to base a work of art on my work of art. But you can't control what they do with it. Van Gogh could paint a Pieta 'after Delacroix'. But Delacroix didn't stand there and go, "well, that's not what I would do." Delacroix already painted his picture, and Van Gogh wanted to do something based on it. THat's how I feel about a film based on something I've written. I loved the film, but the book still exists.

White Oleander is one of my most beloved books, I read it every spring. It taught me a lot as a human and a baby writer. I love and I hate Ingrid. I'm fascinated by her. I'd love to know more about where she came from, what created such an unlikely and extraordinary person. Other than the tiny titbits offered in the book, is there anything you can share about her family/upbringing?

Janet, have you ever read Andersen Prunty's "Sociopaths In Love"? There is something eerily familiar about his character Erica that reminds me of Josie, from your wonderful novel, Paint it Black. I can't pin-point it, but I kept thinking about Josie the entire time I was reading "Socios...."!
