Later on in the story, the author explains the 'gypsy' term. It really doesn't have much to do with her 'Romani heritage' at all. Gypsy has a different meaning in the book than in real life.

I wouldn't look to much into why the author decided to call her a gypsy. In a way how gypsy were always portray as fortune tellers and stuff. It really fit with Gwen's character. So try not to get to hung up on it.
