Just finished "The Sleepwalker" and am wondering...what is with all the DASHES in your writing? I don't mean the dashes that are separating words/syllables into two lines, or the ones used for compound words I mean all the other dashes that can be found on 99% of all the pages or a set of pages. This is the first book I have read of yours, so just wondering if that is your typical writing, etc.

Yes, the difference between a hyphen and a dash. Some of my narrators speak in more complex sentences than others. That's all. I've written twenty books and some have more dashes than others.
I hope nothing is typical of my writing. My hope is that I never write the same book twice.

I have six grandsons. A couple of these grandsons are voracious readers and the others are active readers--a couple of them write. All the boys are between 12 and 17. Suddenly, they are the size of men, and the writers have to keep that secret or on a back burner because they're expected to be all about sports. Did you experience any resistance to your career as a writer as a boy/teen?

Hi Chris, When writing historical fiction, what kind of balance do you use between fact and fiction? I found a wonderful story and am filling in the blanks between what is known and what is speculated, but don't want my work to turn into a "history book" -- which is a challenge for me, as I am a history teacher!
