Peter Sills
Peter Sills asked Michael Finocchiaro:

Hey, I'm writing an essay on how young adults respond to Lolita. I was wondering what age you were when you read it, reviewed it, and if you read it for school or on your own? Thanks! --Peter

Michael Finocchiaro I read this in my 20s and then in my 40s. I reviewed it in my 40s. I think that it is a bit heavy for high school kids, but appropriate for freshman college students. The sexual overtones and freudian situations are, in my opinion, too easy to manipulate by a self-interested professor that just wants to get in the pants of the high school juniors or seniors. I think it is one of the American 20th C masterpieces, but the book requires a minimum of maturity to understand and appreciate. I think that Portnoy's Complaint would be perhaps a better starting point for discussion with high school kids. 'Course, my kids are still young (7 and 10), so I not talking from experience but rather from fear of my kids being manipulated by a sicko. Over-reaction? Perhaps. I would be interested to read about how others answer your questions, Peter.
