Goodreads asked Erica Bauermeister:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Erica Bauermeister Read absolutely everything you can get your hands on. Find the things that feel like what you want to write. Study them like the gorgeous, intricate machines they are. How are they put together? What makes them work so beautifully? How can you do this in your own work?

And when you do write, make it as beautiful as you possibly can before you send it to agents or self-publish. Many writers make the mistake of thinking the professionals or readers will overlook flimsy character development, or typos and bad grammar ("they know what I mean.") They will know what you mean – but it won't be the message you were intending.
