You know, I was dedicated to writing a fearless and unapologetic woman from the start. But I do think that finding out I was having a girl four months into writing the book really made me double down on presenting a complicated and flawed and strong woman.
I want my daughter to grow up in a world where people like Evelyn Hugo exist. And that ran through my mind, most certainly.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is so rich with film history of a certain kind from Hollywood to the French new Wave. Were there any specific films that inspired you or that you find you can just watch over and over again? Did you see bringing any cinematic elements into the storytelling?
