What makes Evelyn Hugo more personal than any other book you've written?

This is a hard question to answer because it is difficult for me to pin down when, exactly, my voice shifted and why.
I think, when I really boil it down, Evelyn Hugo is a more candid book than I've written before. I didn't shy away from any topic, even if it might be a little bit more uncomfortable. And in digging into those things, I put more of my own self into it.
I suppose The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a story that I saw so completely in my head that it made me confident enough to write without any constraints. And I think that comes through.

Hi! Evelyn Hugo seems like a bit of a departure from your other books, both in setting and even tone. Do you see your writing style evolving? If so, what direction do you see yourself going? (I think it is inspiring to see authors stretch the boundaries of their niche!)
