Angel Hench asked Taylor Jenkins Reid:

I sort of love that the cover of the hardcover U.S. edition is misleading. It looks so much like a romance book, and yet its historical fiction and LGBT and a mystery and just great fiction. But I also feel that it does a disservice to the book in that very few men will pick it up. Who determined which cover would house this beauty of a book?

Taylor Jenkins Reid The cover is determined by a variety of factors but the biggest thing leading this one was simply the beauty of it. I was so happy to see that my publisher represented Evelyn on the cover in such a sprawling, gorgeous way.

The book is, perhaps, more subversive and complex than the cover would initially lead you to believe but I think the image captures the glamour of the story -- and of Evelyn -- and I'm very enamored with it.
