At the very end, are we meant to believe he killed the antagonist's final wasp form? It was last described as cut into pieces, buried in sand beside the water, but still moving around of it's own volition. The lack of a conclusive ending makes our protagonists' arcs much less meaningful. I don't need all of my loose ends tied up, but this was kind of a big one.

We're told the creatures can't be killed (mind you, the creatures said that themselves) and we're left with wiggling wasp pieces, not even puffs of dust or incinerated wasp guts. I hate how we don't know and that's probably what Straub was going for. Perhaps he left it open for an unwritten sequel by having Don vow to hunt down de Peyser? I just didn't find the ending as satisfying as I expected after 500 pages.(less)
