Why do you think that the author writes in long, meandering sentences with lots of commas? These sentences seem to contain one point, then another, then a qualification. Does the wandering style reflect the wanderings of the refugees? Or could it be that the many qualifications show that Hamid wants to introduce new ideas and alternative viewpoints?

Beth Chapple When I listened to this author read his own work (via libro.fm audio), I learned what he was doing. His pauses often mean there will be a switch, even a juxtaposition. Not sure how to put it, but it is all part of the tone he creates.
